Service Area

The Sheboygan River Basin includes most of Sheboygan County, along with northeast Ozaukee County, northeast Fond du Lac County, and parts of southern Manitowoc County. SRBP cares for the land and water within this area, as all the water that flows across this land ends up in the Sheboygan River Basin, and ultimately in Lake Michigan. Human actions and activities have an impact on the land and the water that flows through it. This basin includes several smaller watersheds-the Mullet and Onion River are tributaries of the Sheboygan River; and the Black, Sauk, Pigeon and Sucker Rivers drain directly into Lake Michigan.

Our

History

In 1998, a partnership was formed in the Sheboygan Basin to improve natural resource management and to encourage cooperation and citizen involvement.  Facilitated by the Department of Natural Resources and UW-Extension Basin Educator, the Sheboygan Land and Waters Partners was formed. Membership consisted of invited stakeholders. The primary goal was “To protect, restore, and improve the natural resources of the Sheboygan River Basin through a cooperative effort of Federal, Stated and Private Entities.”

In the fall of 2002, in an effort to increase the effectiveness of the partner group, (now renamed the Sheboygan River Basin Partnership ), members identified concerns over several issues in which internal improvement was needed.  It was determined the group needed to improve community and citizen involvement, commitment, advocacy, visibility, accountability, time and resources, and team make-up and structure.

Today, SRBP has been working to care for the Sheboygan River and its tributaries by raising public awareness, engaging participation in stewardship and promoting sound decision making. The group is taking a comprehensive watershed approach by building connections throughout the watershed, through our developing partnerships and through projects that are regional in scope and bring together interconnected aspects of the ecosystem and community.

The Sheboygan River has come a long way in its journey as an Area of Concern, designated as one of the most polluted bodies of water, and now at a point in its recovery where it is nearly ready to have this label removed. SRBP is proud to have been one of the many stakeholders involved in the restoration of the river and continues to work to ensure that it is cared for well into the future.

Lakeshore Natural Resource Partnership

SRBP is a watershed partner of the Lakeshore Natural Resource Partnership (LNRP), the region’s leading environmental advocate for the waters of Lake Michigan. LNRP fosters stewardship and takes action to champion the environment through education and support for local community’s efforts to protect and enhance our greatest natural resources. LNRP builds partnerships and collaborations, provides funding and support, and promotes a forum for discussion and action. With LNRP support, SRBP advocates for a balance between land use and natural resource conservation and protection. For more about LNRP visit www.lnrp.org.
